Man gets 20 years in federal prison for 2018 Galleria carjacking, Jeffco store robbery

Albert Ward III, 35, pleaded guilty in September to use of a firearm during the carjacking and robbery. U.S. District Judge Annemarie Carney Axon sentence Ward to 20 years in prison, according to a joint announcement Wednesday by U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona and FBI Special Agent in Charge Johnnie Sharp, Jr.
Ward had multiple prior felony convictions in state court, including convictions for first-degree robbery, first-degree assault that happened during a 2012 burglary.
The carjacking happened Dec. 6, 2018. It all began that Thursday morning when a woman contacted Birmingham police to report her car had been stolen while she was inside a convenience store on Fourth Avenue in Birmingham. The victim’s phone was inside the vehicle and she was able to track its movements via a phone tracking app.
HOOVER A 50-year-old Birmingham woman has been identified as a suspect in multiple Hoover felony cases.
The Hoover Police Department is looking for the public’s assistance in locating Ronda Jean Brown, who faces warrants for identity theft and three counts of possession of forged instrument. HPD says Brown is also a suspect in multiple felonies (identity theft, possession of forge instrument, forgery, first-degree theft of property and unlawful breaking/entering vehicle) in multiple jurisdictions, including Jefferson County and Morgan County.
On Feb. 11, the Hoover Police Department reported the suspect used stolen identification to cash more than $6,000 in fraudulent checks. A previous report indicated that the suspect broke into a vehicle and stole a purse on Dec. 6, 2020.

Hoover police Chief Nick Derzis said 2020 was the strangest year heâs ever seen in his 40-plus years as a police officer, but it resulted in some positive crime trends for the city.

UPDATE: The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as 42-year-old Charles Eugene Mullins, of Gadsden.
EARLIER:
HOOVER The Hoover Police Department is investigating the death of a man after he fell from an overpass over Interstate 65.
The incident happened at 11:52 p.m., on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2021. Jefferson County Coroner Bill Yates said the man fell from the bridge onto I-65, at the 249.5 mile marker.
The man was taken to UAB Hospital where he died at 1:08 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18.
