Over the past 18 months, the light and small SUV segments have ushered in more new players than any other category right across Australia’s new vehicle market, and the existing hardware has not been left to grow old on the shelf either. All-new arrivals include the just-launched Mazda CX-30, along with the Ford Puma, Kia Stonic, MG ZST, Skoda Kamiq, Toyota Yaris Cross, Volkswagen T-Cross and Volkswagen T-Roc. And a host of updated models have also arrived in tandem: the Hyundai Kona, Nissan QASHQAI, Toyota C-HR, and the long-time sales stand-out in the category, the Mazda CX-3. What is the 2021 Honda HR-V VTi-LX all about?
The Honda HR-V is one of the brand’s biggest-selling models and a lynchpin in the range as the Japanese car-maker moves to a new business structure in Australia from July 1, 2021, which will bring fixed vehicle prices and focus on higher-spec models such as the VTi-LX tested here.
Despite this current generation getting long in the tooth, with an all-new model due for release early in 2022, the Thai-built Honda HR-V small SUV does a pretty good job of holding its own against competitors such as the Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-30, Toyota C-HR, Subaru XV and segment-leading Mitsubishi ASX, to name just a few in this burgeoning segment.

As a former owner of the original
Ford Puma, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to spend six months with the model that has revived the nameplate nearly 20 years after it was discontinued.
They’re very different vehicle styles, though. Two decades have transformed buyer tastes, and inevitably the new Puma is an SUV-inspired crossover, whereas the first Puma was a compact sports coupe.
One commonality: the 21st century Puma is based on the platform of the Fiesta city car, just like the version that existed between 1997 and 2001.
