Located just a few kilometers from the famed Indian icon in the northern city of Agra, this cafe is managed and staffed by acid attack survivors. Most of the smiling women working in the venue, founded by India s Chhanv Foundation in 2014, have visibly scarred skin, some bearing damaged eyes, others appearing as if their entire faces have been melted by the horrifying acts of violence.

The 30-odd acid attack survivors who worked at the cafe, are now busy preparing food and distributing it to the poor on the streets. Their initiative began last month when the Sheroes of Agra and Lucknow cafes came together to help the underprivileged.

The number of visitors to the Taj Mahal and other monuments has dropped to a trickle. The sudden slump in the arrivals has affected travel agencies, photographers, guides and other service providers. The tourism complex is deserted and the hotel occupancy rate has come down to below 50 per cent. The restrictions on marriages and mass gatherings for functions had also hit the hotels badly, owners said.
