HERKIMER - The Salvation Army of Herkimer has set a goal of $35,000 for the 2020 Red Kettle fundraising campaign.
As of Friday afternoon, the total raised stood at $10,337.68, according to Lt. Derrick Purvis. The problem is not just lack of funds, but a lack of volunteers to ring bells at the kettles, he said.
Purvis and his wife, Heather, were appointed commanding officers of the Salvation Army of Herkimer in late August. That was later than the usual time for a new appointment, he said, and the coronavirus pandemic did not make things any easier.
“Typically, we’d be starting to get volunteers and starting our Angel Tree project then,” he said. The Angel Tree project gives families an opportunity to sign up to receive food and toys for children at Christmas. Wish lists are hung on a Christmas tree in a store Herkimer Walmart in this case and shoppers can select an angel from the tree, purchase the items requested and return them to the store or drop the
