Hywel Francis, who has died aged 74, was a gifted academic, and later a Labour MP, who made a unique contribution to chronicling the history of the struggles of the South Wales miners.
The son of the coalfield’s Communist miners’ leader Dai Francis, who led them through the disputes of the 1970s, he chaired the Wales Congress in Support of Mining Communities during the bitter national strike of 1984-85. But he also left his mark as a historian.
