New Delhi [India], January 27 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to grant interim protection from arrest to actor Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub and makers of web series Tandav and allowed them to approach High Courts for relief from arrest or quashing of FIRs.
A Bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, R Subhash Reddy and MR Shah agreed to hear the issue of transferring and clubbing several FIRs registered against them across the country and issued notice to complainants on the prayer.
Ayyub, head of Amazon Prime Video (India), and the makers have approached the top court seeking protection from arrest on the FIRs registered against them for allegedly hurting religious sentiments and telecasting objectionable content.

The controversy around Saif Ali Khan starrer web series refuses to die down and in the wake of all this the makers and the cast of the show approached the Supreme Court of India with an appeal for interim protection from arrest. In a hearing on Wednesday, the top court directed the petitioner to approach the High Court for relief from arrest and refused to grant protection.
A bench of three judges including Justices Ashok Bhushan, R Subhash Reddy and M R Shah heard separate petitions from the show’s director Ali Abbas Zafar, Amazon Prime India head Aparna Purohit, producer Himanshu Mehra, and writer Gaurav Solanki and actor Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub’s.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to pass an order to protect the makers and artists of Tandav web series on Amazon from arrest even as it agreed to examine their plea to club the FIRs registered against them across various States on the charge of hurting Hindu religious sentiments.
A three-judge Bench led by Justice Ashok Bhushan asked them to approach lower courts concerned for interim relief, including bail. The court also rejected their plea to quash the FIRs.

The Supreme Court Wednesday declined to grant interim protection from any coercive action to Ali Abbas Zafar, Director of web series Tandav , and others seeking quashing of FIRs against them for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of Hindus and issued notices Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and other states on their pleas. Observing that freedom of speech and expression is not absolute and is subject to restrictions, the top court said Zafar, Amazon Prime India head Aparna Purohit, producer Himanshu Mehra, the show s writer Gaurav Solanki and actor Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub may seek bail from courts concerned in the FIRs lodged in connection with the web series.
