South Bend Brew Werks will be joined by Mayor James Mueller to celebrate a ribbon cutting ceremony for the company’s new location in the Hibberd Building on Friday at 4:30 p.m. This new location features 16 taps of small batch beers that rotate periodically, a venue that fits a capacity seventy percent greater than their old location, and an outdoor patio. A new, larger kitchen will be serving food in a revamped menu that features pizza, grilled cheese sandwiches, baked pasta dishes and more.

Alcohol home delivery service comes to South Bend area

As delivery options have expanded beyond pizza and Chinese food, alcohol has become the new product South Bend area residents can get brought right to their front door. Earlier this month, area liquor store chain Blarney Stone Wine and Spirits began partnering with e-commerce company, Drizly, to allow customers to order beer, wine and liquor to be delivered by store employees to their door within an hour of purchase. Customers are able to use the Drizly app, shop the Blarney Stone’s inventory electronically and purchase their product directly through the e-commerce site. The app will prompt customers to verify their legal age by scanning the barcode on the back of their state driver’s license and a delivery driver will be on their way. The driver then delivers the product, but must prove the receiver is 21 or older and must, once again, scan the driver’s license for verification.

Second in a Series: Complete Streets, Incomplete Transit

Second in a Series: Complete Streets, Incomplete Transit Written by David Peter Alan, Contributing Editor In my last report, I looked at Pete Buttigieg, President-elect Biden’s nominee for Secretary of Transportation, and what he would bring to the post. I looked at his own concepts as he expressed them in his acceptance speech, how he might serve USDOT’s business constituents, and his background. Part of that background is the time he spent as mayor of South Bend, a post he occupied starting in 2012. As I will describe in this article, he can claim some credit as an urbanist with his “Smart Streets” policy for the city’s downtown area, but local bus service remains limited, and the passenger trains that ostensibly run to South Bend do not go anywhere near downtown.

Market Basket: What to expect in 2021 retail and restaurant news

With 2020 behind us, thankfully, we look at what’s to come. Here are some quick hits I previously reported on, to give a glimpse on what to expect for 2021. Please keep in mind that plans can fall through and new plans will arise throughout the year, but this will give you a head start on what to expect. If 2020 taught us anything, it’s that things can certainly change in an instant. • Soma Pole Studio will open and host its first class Tuesday. The business at 218 Sycamore St. in downtown South Bend provides several pole exercising dance classes. • Trader Joe’s will open a South Bend location. Although a timeline has not yet been determined, the California-based grocery store chain is slated to be built at the corner of Howard and Eddy streets near Eddy Street Commons.
