A surprising number of U.S. counties have 100 percent rural land 702, in fact. To determine the 50 most rural counties in the U.S., Stacker analyzed population density data from the 2010 Census Urban and Rural Classification. The 2010 Census is the most comprehensive, reliable, and recent urban-rural classification available.
According to the Census Bureau, rural land encompasses any land that isn t an urban area. To be considered an urban area, a place has to have a densely settled core of census tracts or blocks and count at least 2,500 people, at least 1,500 of whom must be residents of non-institutional buildings. Areas with 50,000 people or more are considered urbanized areas, while areas with between 2,500 and 50,000 people are considered urban clusters.

Which counties are likeliest to ditch regulations the fastest?
In some of the state s most politically conservative counties, leaders and residents alike have decried restrictions since the start of the pandemic more than a year ago. And despite this state being solidly in the blue in statewide and national elections, there are a lot of conservative counties. In 2020, 37 of Colorado s 64 counties voted for Donald Trump, who consistently downplayed the seriousness of the virus and pushed aggressively to reopen the economy and society in general, often against the advice of his own health officials.

On April 8, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment added key data to its barrage of information about the battle against COVID-19. The CDPHE s vaccine dashboard now reveals the counties that have vaccinated the highest percentage of their eligible population and the statistics contain plenty of surprises.
At this point, counties with smaller populations occupy both the upper and lower portions of the chart. The top performer is Mineral County, which numbered just 824 residents in 2019, according to the U.S. Census Bureau; it has a 49.2 percent vaccination rate. Meanwhile, Bent County, whose 2019 population hit 5,787, ranks 64th out of 64, at 10.2 percent.
