X-Rated Films, Arson And Daylight Saving: Author Talks About The Complicated History Of Colorado s Drive-In Theaters

/ This photo of the marquee of the Holiday Twin Drive-In Theatre in Fort Collins was taken in July of 1997. More than 20 years later, the marquee still looks a lot like that, and the theater is still up and running. It’s one of only about eight drive-in theaters still open in Colorado. Most theaters were forced to close their doors during the pandemic, but drive-ins have found new opportunities and new audiences. With spring just around the corner and the state’s handful of drive-in theaters gearing up for the season, KUNC arts reporter Stacy Nick spoke with Michael Kilgore, author of “Drive-Ins of Route 66” and “Drive-Ins of Colorado,” to find out more about our outdoor theater history.

Local Author Spotlight: Richard Peres

Connection to Fredericksburg region: Eight years ago, I decided to live in Fredericksburg after researching the area on the Internet. I had been living in Turkey for four years with my wife (who is Turkish). I liked the area’s affordability, history and closeness to D.C. However, I am a native of New Jersey. I was inspired to write a book because: I was originally rewriting and researching my grandfather’s autobiography about his Navy career when I found on ancestry.com a first cousin, who informed me of my great-grandfather. Once I looked into his life a German immigrant who had two families, fought in the Civil War and endured in New York City’s worst neighborhood I got hooked and wrote a novel based on him.
