PEORIA (HOI) A vandalized community garden on Peoria s south side is getting an assist from Children s Home.
Children s Home of Illinois president Matt George saw our story from two weeks ago, when a south Peoria community garden near Harrison Homes was vandalized. What they are doing here with these gardens is what community is all about, George said.
George and the Children s Home got in touch with Budded Mattah, the urban agriculture incubator that started this garden months ago. They offered to replace the vandalized food with food grown in their larger farm garden. We started this very grassroots, going door to door with a small group of us, and now we have the CEO of Children s Home wanting to get behind us and support, Ryan Foster with Budded Mattah said.
Based on a review of the city s existing records, the department believes Scally is the longest
serving police officer in its history, said police spokeswoman Amy Dotson. The state mandates retirement at age 65 for officers.
In the time he s been on the job, Scally has become a fixture in the community a well-known face for citizens. Captain Scally was the epitome of old school community policing, like a classic beat cop. He knew everybody and everybody knew him. You couldn’t go anywhere without someone shouting his name from across the street or across the room. Mike loves people and it showed in how he approached the community, said former Peoria Police Chief Steve Settingsgaard, who headed the department from 2005 to 2014.
Treat people right. On the command staff, we get a chance to talk to every new recruit when they come in. And my advice is always, whenever you are dealing with people, you treat them like family or like you would want to be treated in the same situation, said Scally, who will retire later this week as a police captain after 43 years and 43 days on the job. As long as you do that, you ll never have a problem on this job.

PEORIA Melvin Sanders Sr. seeks hometown redemption.
As a gang chief during the 1980s and 1990s, Sanders beleaguered Peoria with drugs and violence. Awash in booze and drugs, he left town about two decades ago to chase a woman, but instead found Jesus.
But even amid his spiritual salvation, old sins exacted a heavy price. Two adult sons were shot to death in Peoria, while a third recently was charged in a gunshot slaying. In the aftermath, Sanders readily recognizes the role he played in breeding mayhem on the streets of Peoria.
“God told me I’m reaping what I’ve sewn,” the 53-year-old Sanders says. “ … I’m getting what I’ve done to other people.”
