Has there been a social democratic turn following Joe Biden’s victory? Now, after all, his administration promises not only to tax the rich, but help the poor. Then there is China, the EU and the so-called third world. This is an edited version of the talk Hillel Ticktin gave to the May 27 Online Communist Forum
Thatcher vs. The Miners, the company’s first feature documentary.
The film plans to use new evidence, including the miners’ own footage, along with first-person testimony, archive footage and journalism to explore the conflict between British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s government and the National Union of Mineworkers, that occurred nearly 40 years ago.
Cabinet papers obtained for the documentary reveal the enormity of the conflict between Thatcher and union leader Arthur Scargill. The film also features interviews with miners’ leaders and union officials from the time, striking and working miners, and three members of Thatcher’s staff: Lord Robin Butler, Lord Andrew Turnbull and Lord Stephen Sherborne.

The new display commemorating the centenary of the Royal British Legion at the Norden war memorial
Two new displays commemorating the centenary of the Royal British Legion have been installed by Rochdale In Bloom in Norden and Rochdale (Friday 14 May).
The new display at the Norden war memorial consists of a large mosaic of the new Royal British Legion logo, created by artist Gill Rothwell – who created the poppy mosaic stone installed last October for Remembrance Day – alongside a ‘100’ display made up of marigold flowers.
A small service of appreciation took place in Norden, attended by the president of the Rochdale branch of the legion, David Forbes, Peter Clegg, President of Rochdale & District Fusiliers Association, plus veteran and local businessman Harry Bell, Norden councillors Peter Winkler and Jim Gartside, and members of Rochdale in Bloom.
