Last month, District 38 state Rep. Rebecca Dow and District 39 state Rep. Luis Terrazas, both Republicans representing parts of Grant County, spoke against HB 200, “Water Trust Board Projects and N.M. Unit Fund,” ahead of a House vote on the legislation. The proposal seeks to sideline the New Mexico Entity of the Central Arizona Project from its proposed future role as a regional water authority and prohibit more Arizona Water Settlements Act funds from being spent on a Gila River diversion.

Nick Lemme, a Silver City resident, raises a controversial flag containing profane language in his front yard last week. He began flying the flag shortly after the election of President Joe Biden, and has faced backlash and some support from the community as a result of the strong language used on the flag.
Several Silver City and Grant County residents raised concerns after two private residences one on Swan Street in Silver City and one in Arenas Valley began flying flags that use profane language, drawing questions as to whether public displays of profanity are protected under the First Amendment.
Anti-diversion bill heads to House Written by Geoffrey Plant on February 24, 2021
With the majority Democratic members of two key state legislative committees recommending in hearings over consecutive Saturdays that a House bill to sideline the Gila River diversion group “do pass,” the future of the New Mexico Entity of the Central Arizona Project has never looked so imperiled.
As the bill, titled “Water Trust Board Projects and N.M. Unit Fund,” heads to the House floor for a vote as soon as this week, N.M. CAP Entity Executive Director Anthony Gutierrez made an appearance at a work session for Grant County commissioners on Tuesday morning. Like all of the presenters at the work session, Gutierrez made his presentation by video. He began his talk with a disclaimer that everything he was about to say might soon be rendered moot by the passage of House Bill 200.
