ROMNEY, W.Va. â A 12-year-old boy seriously hurt in a head-on vehicle crash Dec. 18 on U.S. Route 50 died Sunday of his injuries, the Hampshire County Sheriffâs Office said.
The crash, which happened near Little Cacapon Road about 10:05 a.m., also killed James H. Burkett Jr. and his wife, Shirley J. Burkett, of Points.
The child, who was being treated at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia, was a passenger in a Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Jeremiah Behr Jr. of Springfield. Behr was critically hurt and remains hospitalized.
Police said Behr lost control of his vehicle and struck a Ford Focus occupied by the Burketts. Bald tires on Behrâs vehicle may have caused his vehicle to slide out of control, police said.
James H. âPeteâ Burkett and his wife, Shirley, were both pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the other vehicle, J.J. Behr Jr. of Springfield and the 12-year-old passenger in his Chevrolet Cavalier were both transported to hospitals in critical condition, Hampshire County Sheriffâs deputies said.
Behr, 20, on Tuesday lay in a bed at Winchester Medical Center with multiple injuries. His mother, Jes Mendez Behr, reported that he is breathing on his own, but has a long road to recovery.
âWhen he is ready to move around he will be in a wheelchair for a while,â she said.
