Judge won't dismiss lawsuit against Springfield police, Hampden County sheriff on behalf of woman who died in custody

Judge won’t dismiss lawsuit against Springfield police, Hampden County sheriff on behalf of woman who died in custody Updated May 07, 8:58 PM; Posted May 07, 3:35 PM Facebook Share SPRINGFIELD “I can’t breathe. I’m in so much pain right now,” were the words Madelyn Linsenmeir uttered days before her death following her arrest by Springfield police in 2018. According to a lawsuit filed last year in U.S. District Court, her pleas for help went unheeded by both Springfield police and staff at the Western Massachusetts Regional Women’s Correctional Center, where she ultimately died from a heart infection. A federal judge this week refused to dismiss the lawsuit filed by Linsenmeir’s family against the city and the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department, rejecting arguments by attorneys for both.

Holyoke City Council addresses police practices, policies after corruption allegation

Holyoke City Council addresses police practices, policies after corruption allegation Updated 12:35 PM; HOLYOKE – The City Council’s Public Safety Committee took up an order that supports examining the Police Department’s policies and practices. City Councilors Rebecca Lisi, Gladys Lebron-Martinez and Juan Anderson-Burgos filed the order after a YouTube video posted by Police Officer Rafael Roca alleged widespread corruption within the Police Department. Roca was suspended from duty in early March. The order stated, “In an effort to obtain neutral, fact-based data and statistics, the city contract an independent assessment of Holyoke Police Department’s structure, policies and practices.” Ward 2 Councilor and Acting Mayor Terence Murphy, the committee’s chair, said his goal was to share as much public information and possible “to prove what we have and what has been working well” within the Police Department.
