The team, led by experts at McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences in Canada, tracked the diets and health outcomes of 134,297 people from 21 countries spanning five continents, including Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Sweden and China.
They found a 46 per cent higher risk of major CVD events, like heart disease and stroke, as well as a 51 per cent higher risk of death among those who ate at least 150g a week of processed meat, compared with those who ate no processed meat.

The Ontario government says some people 50 and over in specific hot spot postal code areas including in Hamilton, Niagara, and Halton will soon be able to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
As it moves to Phase 2 of its vaccination rollout, the province is expanding the age range in neighbourhoods identified as disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.
The postal codes are from 13 different public health units being prioritized.
The selected communities include:

JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions, the study, drawing on the large SWEDEHEART registry, supports the current recommendations from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) for uninterrupted oral anticoagulation (U-OAC) in patients with atrial fibrillation, venous thromboembolism, or a mechanical heart valve undergoing unplanned, nonemergent PCI, investigators say.
