MEMORY LANE: Keighley quarryman became leading civil engineer

TOWARDS the top of Halifax Road, between Ingrow and Cross Roads, is Whins Wood Recreation Ground. It consists of a crown bowling green, pavilion and small football ground that nestle into the hillside on the site of an old quarry known as Whins Delf. In the 1870s the quarry was leased by Enoch Tempest, a stone cutter and quarryman who was born in Cross Roads in 1846. Though now largely forgotten, he was destined to be one of the north’s most prominent civil engineers. An enterprising young man, he had followed his father into the stone trade and during his early years he was briefly in partnership with Lister Marriner of Greengate Mill in Keighley.

Filming for BBC series Gentleman Jack takes place at historic Oakwell Hall

FILMING for TV series Gentleman Jack is taking place at historic Oakwell Hall in Birstall this week. TV crews have taken over the hall, which is currently closed to the public due to Covid, to film scenes for series two of the period drama. Oakwell was used as a location in November and December for the show, and the production is expected to return again later in the summer. Eric Brown at Oakwell Hall said: The filming is all taking place in the Hall, with various rooms in our building featuring as a number of locations and settings in the drama.

FILMING for Gentleman Jack in Saltaire looks to have finished as the set is being dismantled today. Part of Salts Mill has been turned into an old street scene for filming for the second series of the show over the last couple of weeks. But a skip was spotted being filled up at the site with full of parts of the set. The set included a pub, tailors and a chemist. The award-winning drama, created by Sally Wainwright, which follows the life of 19th century landowner Anne Lister, has also been filming in Halifax. Parking on Victoria Road in the village was suspended for a final time earlier this week while scenes were shot, with the pavement taped off for filming to continue.
