On 28 Nov 1843, the United Kingdom and France jointly recognized the Hawaiian Kingdom as a sovereign and independent State, which was followed by formal recognition by the United States on 6 Jul 1844. By 1893, when it was overthrown, the Hawaiian Kingdom maintained over 90 legations (embassies) and consulates throughout the world.
