Queen Liliuokalani, last Monarch of Hawaii (bottom) – On 17 Jan 1893, Hawaii’s monarchy was overthrown when a group of businessmen and sugar planters aided by US Marines forced Queen Liliuokalani to abdicate.
On 28 Nov 1843, the United Kingdom and France jointly recognized the Hawaiian Kingdom as a sovereign and independent State, which was followed by formal recognition by the United States on 6 Jul 1844. By 1893, when it was overthrown, the Hawaiian Kingdom maintained over 90 legations (embassies) and consulates throughout the world.
