Pickin Features West Coast Bluegrass
Details
On this week’s
Pickin on WHRV,, we pay tribute to West Coast Bluegrass. During the Great “Folk Scare” of the early 1960s, Bluegrass music was thriving, especially on the West Coast. Bands like The Dillards and The Kentucky Colonels dominated the music scene.
Pickin Producer Harold Smith was a teen living in Los Angeles at the time and saw many of the bands, leading him to a lifetime of involvement in Bluegrass music first as a member of East Virginia and today, as the host of
Pickin . Relive some of Harold’s memories of a special time in Americana music with West Coast Bluegrass, Sunday night at 7:00 on WHRV.

Local bar giving incentive to vaccinated employees By Tiffany Thompson | May 3, 2021 at 6:56 AM CDT - Updated May 3 at 6:57 AM
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - A bar in Huntsville is giving its employees a $100 gift card for Visa, Walmart, or Amazon once they are fully vaccinated.
Harold Smith, Manager of the Brass Tap in Huntsville, said this incentive started a few weeks ago company-wide, and at the Huntsville location it’s already paying off. Smith said after the program started more staff signed up for their shots. He said it not only helps protect them but also it’s a way for guests to feel comfortable walking through the doors. Smith said it helps business too.
SANFORD, Maine – You might have driven through large billows of smoke if you passed the Acton Public Safety Building on Route 109 on Tuesday afternoon. You may have even glimpsed flames spreading through a large patch of dry leaves and brush.
No need to worry. Everything was under control.
Fire Science students from Sanford Regional Technical Center and their instructor, Capt. Harold Smith, were on the scene and knew exactly what they were doing.
That drill on Tuesday is just one aspect of Smith’s fire science course, and it s just one example why the Sanford-Springvale Call Firefighters recently saw fit to donate $28,000 to the program.
