How are business schools promoting research that improves business practice and changes society for the better? What does such research look like in real-world contexts? And how are schools quantifying its true impact?
Business school administrators and scholars are still working out how to respond to these complex questions, but the answers are becoming clearer. Not only have revised accreditation standards encouraged schools to place stronger emphasis on engagement and societal impact, but the pandemic has underscored, on an even larger scale, the important role that business research can play in helping humanity solve seemingly intractable problems.

Andrew Karolyi, acting dean of the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business since Kevin F. Hallock stepped down March 4, will serve as dean of the college for the remainder of Hallock’s term, Provost Michael Kotlikoff has announced.
The Cornell University Board of Trustees’ Executive Committee approved the appointment April 8. Karolyi’s term will end June 30, 2024.

Karolyi is also the college’s dean of academic affairs, and the Harold Bierman Jr. Distinguished Professor of Management in the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management.

Kevin F. Hallock, the dean of the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, will depart Cornell this summer to become president of the University of Richmond, effective Aug. 15.

Hallock will step down as dean effective March 4 but will remain a member of the Cornell faculty and continue to serve on campus committees through August. Andrew Karolyi, deputy dean and dean of academic affairs and the Harold Bierman Jr. Distinguished Professor of Management, has been named acting dean.

“During Kevin’s 16-year tenure at Cornell, he has held several administrative roles, including the dean of Cornell’s ILR School and, most recently, dean of Cornell’s SC Johnson College of Business,” Provost Michael Kotlikoff said. “In each role, he brought a strong vision and leadership that helped to make him and the colleges he oversaw successful.
