The two-week event has been organized by Vision Hallowell, the Hallowell Conservation Commission and Kennebec Land Trust. People can visit some of the many businesses that have opened recently or reconnect with old favorites downtown. Hallowell’s Vaughan Woods has been overcrowded recently, so the groups look to introduce the community to other outdoor Hallowell places, like “Little Egypt.”

Preservation grants awarded to 18 Maine nonprofits have long-term impact

Nonprofits across Maine are sharing $100,000 in charitable grants that will support building preservation and maintenance and have a long-term impact on local economies, according to the funder. The Rhode Island-based 1772 Foundation awarded matching grants from $2,000 to $10,000 to 18 nonprofits from Kennebunk to Eastport, representing historic preservation groups in 11 of the state s 16 counties. The money can be used for exterior improvements like painting, surface restoration, fire and security systems, as well as repairing and restoring chimneys, porches, roofs, windows, foundations, sills and masonry. Margaret Waldock, president of the 1772 Foundation, said the grants are an investment in protecting assets that are important to communities and their economic development.

Hallowell library to hold community read via Zoom Share HALLOWELL Hubbard Free Library will hold a Zoom community read of “The Plague,” a short 1947 novel by Nobel Prize winner Albert Camus, at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 1. “The Plague” depicts the French Algerian town of Oran, which is suddenly struck by the bubonic plague. It raises many of the same issues we face today with COVID-19: lockdowns, quarantining, social distancing, and vaccines. It also deals with how one should behave when a pestilence strikes. Two Hallowell residents will lead the discussion. Dr. Greg Fahy, Professor of Philosophy at University of Maine at Augusta, will be the discussion facilitator, and Dr. Syd Sewall, a pediatrician with a degree in public health, will provide background on infectious diseases.

Screenshot via Zoom HALLOWELL An initial draft of Hallowell’s proposed municipal budget for fiscal 2021 includes $6,860,145 in spending, an increase of $357,001 or 5.49% to current spending. No action was taken on the proposed budget Monday night, when the City Council met over Zoom. City Councilor Maureen AuCoin called the budget “very preliminary” before she and other councilors held a brief discussion on the proposal. A memorandum included with meeting documents reported the City Council’s first action on the spending plan is expected in April.
