File pic of a burial of a Covid-19 victim BELAGAVI: Following a dreadful mix up, officials in Kagwad, Belagavi, had to exhume the body of a 71-year-old after a private hospital discovered that they had handed over the dead man to the wrong family. Adhering to strict Covid-19 protocol, the family had buried the deceased without even taking a look at his face. It began on May 1 when Payappa Satyappa Hallolli, 82, was admitted to Venus Hospital in Belagavi city after he tested positive for Covid-19. The next day, hospital authorities phoned Hallolli’s family saying he had died. The body was dispatched by a hearse later in the afternoon to Mole village where the family resides, and the last rites were conducted almost immediately.

HUBBALLI: A cloth merchant who stared death in the face on the operation table, when he underwent a surgery for brain tumour, is now helping those without means to ward off the threat of Covid-19. After the state government enforced a lockdown a few days ago, 47-year-old Bharat Nahar, a Hubballi-based cloth merchant residing in Keshwapur, has been busy distributing masks to people who cannot afford to buy them. Against the backdrop of the alarming spike in Covid-19 cases across Karnataka, it is hard to overstate the role that masks play in checking the spread of the infection. In addition to distributing masks, Nahar has been giving out food and water bottles, whole carrying with a first-aid kit to treat stray dogs and cattle, the welfare of which has taken a backseat in these chaotic times.
