Buncombe County Sheriff s Office says an inmate died just over three hours after she was booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility on April 10.
According to a news release from the sheriff s office, a detention officer at the jail was performing regular supervision rounds at 3:27 p.m. April 10 and spoke with the detainee, Tania Shepherd, 37, who wasn’t feeling well.
The officer called for a nurse who arrived 2 minutes later. The nurse checked Shepherd s vital signs and administered Narcan, a medication used to counter the effects of opioid overdose.
Buncombe County EMS arrived at the detention facility at 3:41 p.m. and continued medical care as the detainee was transported to Mission Hospital. Shepherd had been booked into the jail at 12:19 p.m. that same day, charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and given a $5,000 bond, said Aaron Sarver, Buncombe County Sheriff s Office spokesman.
