On Jan. 15, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) released the 2020 state graduation rate, which increased from 87.29 percent overall in 2019 to 87.69 percent overall in 2020, a .44 percent increase.
Indiana Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner says “this modest improvement in (the) graduation rate is encouraging, especially as Hoosier students and educators have tackled unprecedented challenges throughout this pandemic.”

Angola advances to NECC tourney semis

Playing its seventh game in 12 nights, Angola proved up to the challenge once again, knocking off Class 3A, No. 4 Garrett, 44-38, in Northeast Corner Conference tournament quarterfinal action Wednesday in Angola.
Hanna Knoll paced three Hornets (12-3) in double figures with 17 points. Riley Pepple added 14 and Lauren Leach 10 for Angola, which has won all seven games in its recent stretch following a three-week layoff.
Morgan Ostrowski finished with 15 points for the Railroaders (15-2), who lost for the first time in regulation this season. Angola will play host to Fairfield on Friday in one tournament semifinal matchup. The Falcons knocked off West Noble on Wednesday in Benton, 53-44.
Three players from local schools named to 2021 Silver Anniversary Team

Three local players have been named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame s 2021 Silver Anniversary Teams, which honor top high school players on the 25th anniversary of their senior seasons.
Lisa (Winter) Finn of Huntington North, the 1996 Miss Basketball honoree, won four sectional titles, three regional titles and the 1995 state championship with the Vikings. She averaged 19.8 points, 6 rebounds and 3.2 assists her senior year, and is now a teacher and girls basketball coach at Cathedral.
Jaymee Wappes of East Noble was named second-team all-state and finished her career as the Knights leader in career points (1,243) and career assists (268). She was the coach of the North Side girls from 2011 to 2019.
