The gusty southeast winds blew the smoke making it look as though the fire was near the State Capitol building, when in reality it was about one mile away with two major roadways and dozens of homes, businesses and state office buildings in between.
The Pierre Police Department, Hughes County Sheriff’s Office and AMR ambulance service assisted the Pierre Volunteer Fire Department with the call. Emergency responders were on scene for about an hour.

There will be a leadership change at the Hughes County Jail starting July 1.
Sheriff Darin Johnson told county commissioners at yesterday’s (Mon.) meeting both he and jail administrator Bill Dodge will be retiring June 30.
Johnson was appointed interim sheriff in January 2019 filling the position vacated by long-time sheriff Mike Leidholt, who left to take over as the Secretary of Corrections for the State of South Dakota. Johnson was appointed sheriff in February 2019 and was unopposed on the 2020 election ballot.
Dodge has been with the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office since 1996 (25 years). Johnson has been there since 1997 (24 years).
With the Presidential Inauguration next Wednesday, states across the nation are beginning to put increased security measures in play to help protect State Capitol buildings due to the possible threat of additional protests.
The FBI has warned officials in all 50 states of the possible threat of armed protests at their state Capitol buildings next week.
Law enforcement here in South Dakota is remaining tight-lipped about their plans to help protect government buildings in the state.
Dakota News Now is reporting a larger law enforcement presence around the Capitol as state legislation kicks off in Pierre. As of now, the Department of Public Safety is not willing to say if the increased security will continue into next week as President-Elect Joe Biden takes the oath of office on (January 20).
