The investigation into the deaths of two individuals recovered from the Missouri River near Pierre late Wednesday (July 21, 2021) has been completed.
Information from the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office says forensic examination indicates 60 year old Charles Serbousek of Pierre likely died as a result of a heart attack prior to his body entering the water.
The cause of death of 6 year old Joseph Serbousek of Pierre was determined to be drowning.
Names of the victims are being released with the permission of the family. Hughes County Sheriff Patrick Callahan asks that the public and media respect the family’s privacy.

A 26 year old man from Hankinson, ND, faces a handful of charges after a Saturday night (May 1, 2021) pursuit in Hughes, Stanley and Haakon counties.
Hughes County Sheriff Darin Johnson says approximately 9pm, a County Deputy attempted to stop a 2008 Ford Fusion that was speeding excessively on Highway 14 just east of Pierre. The car did not stop and a pursuit ensued.
The chase went through Pierre and across the Missouri River Bridge into Fort Pierre, then into Stanley County. The vehicle continued westbound on Highways 34/14 at a high rate of speed. There was minimal traffic on the roadway and additional law enforcement agencies assisted in the pursuit.
