Ferrari F40 Destroyed After Bursting Into Flames

This doesn t look salvageable. Launched in 1987, the Ferrari F40 is one of the most fabled supercars of all time. A successor to the 280 GTO, the F40 paved the way for future flagship Ferraris like the Enzo and LaFerrari. Only 1,315 examples were built between 1987 and 1992. Sadly, one of them almost perished last year after catching on fire in Monaco, and now another example has burned to a crisp in Japan. According to local media reports, a couple were enjoying putting the legendary supercar through its paces on the winding roads of Japan s famous Hakone Turnpike when the driver and passenger noticed smoke billowing from the engine.

Thankfully, the couple inside managed to pull the car over before escaping without injury. Unfortunately, the F40 wasn t so lucky in avoiding injury.  The cause of the fire remains a mystery, but some have guessed that a loose fuel hose would be to blame. If this caused fuel to make contact with a hot exhaust, fire is almost the only outcome.  Just last year we saw an almost identical scene on the streets of Monaco when an F40 burnt to the ground. The reason behind this blaze was never revealed, but we can imagine it d be along the same lines.

Ferrari only ever produced 1,315 examples of the F40 and sadly, there is now one less on the roads. Fortunately, neither the driver nor the passenger were injured in the blaze. Ferrari first introduced the F40 in 1987 as the successor to the potent 288 GTO. It left the factory with a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 471 hp at 7,000 rpm and 426 lb-ft (577 Nm) of torque at 4,000 rpm, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. While the F40 was later replaced by the F50 which itself made way for the Enzo and then the hybrid LaFerrari, many still consider the F40 to be the greatest Ferrari ever created.

As fate would have it, the Prancing Horse manufactured a little more than 1,300 copies through 1992 due to surprisingly high demand for the V8-engined supercar. 7 photos A year after an F40 burned to a crisp in Monaco, another example of the breed went up in flames on the Hakone Turnpike in Japan.
