All Things Bakelite: The Age of Plastic - Movie Review

Oh, Polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride, how you changed the world. And, oh, Leo Baekeland, how we depend on what you created when you formulated the first synthetic plastic, Bakelite. The Dutch migrant and researcher was as much a father of modernity as Thomas Edison, and All Things Bakelite: The Age of Plastic is a charming if brief chemistry lesson on the development of a material upon which the 20th century was built. Not that most people remember, as shown in a vox pop intro of befuddled citizens who have no clue what it is ( artificial bacon being the most common answer). Fortunately, there is a succession of chemists who explain what was so special about Baekeland s innovation, while great-grandson and executive producer Hugh Karraker is on-hand to chirpily give the familial viewpoint.

All Things Bakelite Sneak Peek | TV Grapevine

All Things Bakelite Sneak Peek ALL THINGS BAKELITE, the third documentary feature from Director John Maher (Throw it Down), will arrive on multiple digital platforms on June 29  worldwide. In partnership with Bitmax, Executive Producer Hugh Karraker is bringing his great-grandfather Leo Baekeland’s story to six continents via streaming platforms such as iTunes, Apple TV, Google Play, YouTube, VUDU and more. In 1907, Leo Baekeland changed the world forever. Baekeland was a Belgian-American chemist best known for the inventions of Velox photographic paper in 1893, and, more importantly, Bakelite in 1907. He has been called “The Father of the Plastics Industry” for his invention of Bakelite, an inexpensive, nonflammable and versatile plastic, which marked the beginning of the modern plastics industry.
