Firefighters tackle huge fire in Slieve Blooms

Fire crews tackled a large fire in the Slieve Bloom mountains on the Laois-Offaly border on Sunday March 7.
Crews from Mountrath, Portlaoise, Mountmellick and Rathdowney stations spent the Sunday dealing with a large fire on Conlawn Hill near Ballyfin on the Laois side of the mountains.

An Garda Siochána and National Parks & Wildlife Service will be investigating the source of Sunday’s fire.
Laois Offaly Wildlife Trust has urged people to report illegal fires immediately.

Laois woodlands and walking trails have never been more appreciated thanks to Covid-19 travel restrictions, and now amenities including Dysart Woods, Abbeyleix Bog and the River Barrow, are to get a funding boost.
Nine Laois projects will share in €160,000 of grants, announced this Monday morning January 18.

Corrigmeal Woodland Trail - Phase 2, Upgrade of trail and enhancement, Dysart, Portlaoise - €16,695.00
Killeshin Reservoir Trail Extension, Development of existing trail, Killeshin Village - €19,800.00

No plans or discussions for direct provision centre in Laois village Minister tells Laois Offaly TD

A centre to accommodate asylum seekers and refugees is not being set up in Clonaslee according to correspondence received by Laois Offaly TD, Charlie Flanagan.
Deputy Flanagan sought clarity on the possibility that a direct provision centre was earmarked for the village in the Slieve Blooms from Roderic O Connor, the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth.
In his reply, the Minister told Deputy Flanagan that there is no such plan for what is officially called an International Protection Accommodation Centre in Clonaslee.
