Beekeeping class gets students buzzing

FAIR HILL — The next time Bradford Luff teaches his beginning beekeeper class for Cecil Land Trust he s going to let his students in on a few secrets in advance. Don t wear black. The only natural enemy of the honeybee is the bear, Luff, vice president of the Susquehanna Beekeepers Association, said to his five students Saturday morning. He added that wearing red is also not a good idea because the bees see it as black. As each student donned the protective gear a long sleeved jacket complete with a screened in hood and gloves, Luff urged them to move slow so as not to antagonize the bees swarming in and out of a collection of hives on the property off Blake Road.

Leyland pair praised for saving lives after running into burning building in late-night rescue

Updated Thursday, 20th May 2021, 7:38 pm The quick-thinking and bravery of Kim Almond, 23, and Zach Douglas, 20, is believed to have saved the lives of up to 6 people who were asleep inside their Towngate flats when a huge fire broke out shortly after midnight. The pair, along with their friend Shania Somerville, had been returning from a late-night visit to McDonald s when they drove past a row of shops in Towngate where they spotted the early stages of a fire. They quickly pulled over and called 999, but the fire was already spreading and growing more fierce. Realising that those living in the flats were likely to be asleep and in immediate danger, the pair embarked on a daring rescue mission of their own.
