April 8: Creative Writers Reading Series
George Looney, distinguished professor of English and creative writing at Penn State Behrend, will read from his work – including new collections of poems and short stories – when the Smith Creative Writers Reading Series resumes on April 8. The 6 p.m. program, which is free and open to the public, can be viewed on Zoom; a link and details are available at www.behrend.psu.edu/readings.
Looney is the author of 12 books of poetry and three books of fiction. In 2020 he published two new books: “The Itinerate Circus: New and Selected Poems, 1995-2020” and “The Worst May Be Over: Stories,” which won Elixir Press’s Fiction Award. His other titles include “What Light Becomes: The Turner Variations,” which won the Red Mountain Poetry Prize, and the novel Report from a Place of Burning, which was selected for the Leapfrog Press Fiction Award. 6 p.m. â 3/20 Coalition will hold âCriminalization of Mental Health Crisesâ as a part of a 10 day event leading up to the two-year anniversary of Osaze Osagieâs death.
Osagie was a 29-year-old Black State College resident who had autism and a history of schizophrenia. He was shot and killed by State College Police officers on March 20, 2019.

4 p.m. â Esther Obonyo, an associate professor of engineering design and architectural engineering, will continue Penn Stateâs EarthTalks Seminar Series âEnergy and climate policy: How to avoid a global hothouse.â Obonyo will discuss how the carbon footprint can be reduced via Zoom.
The series focuses on âpolicies and technologiesâ to slow global warming, according to Penn State News.

7 p.m. â Cristen Conger and Caroline Ervin of Unladylike Media will host âConfronting White Feminismâ via livestream. The two will discuss the intersection of the #MeToo movement and the abolition movement. Additionally, they will discuss how feminism and white womanhood have âpushed up against racial equity,â according to Penn State News.
