SMITH COUNTY, Texas Beginning April 1, the Smith County Animal Control and Shelter will begin charging small fees to offset the costs of housing dogs at the shelter.
The Smith County Commissioners Court approved the implementation of a fee schedule at its meeting on Tuesday, February 23.
Smith County Animal Control and Shelter Supervisor, Amber Greene, says the average stay at the shelter for a dog is 15 days, which costs the county $77. Adoptions have been free, but beginning April 1, adoptions from the shelter will cost $30, which will include some vaccinations, a microchip, and 30 days of pet health insurance.

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - The Smith County Elections Commission voted Tuesday to hire longtime Elections Administrator Denise Hernandez to head Smith Countyâs Elections Office.
After interviewing two candidates and holding several meetings to discuss the issue, the Elections Commission agreed to hire Hernandez, of Athens, who has been the Henderson County Elections Administrator since 2008.

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - For more than a decade, Jeff Warr has represented Precinct 1 on the Smith County Commissioners Court.
Warr attended his last court meeting as a commissioner on Tuesday morning, although his retirement isn’t effective until Dec. 31, 2020.
“I tell people (moving to Smith County) was really one of the greatest things that happened in my life,” Warr said in an interview with KLTV.
