For the second time this year, Olivia Rodrigo has broken the record for most global Spotify streams in a single week (per filtered Spotify Charts data).
According to Spotify Charts, Rodrigo’s new “good 4 u” received 84,131,760 global Spotify plays during the May 21-27 tracking period. Easily enough for #1 on this week’s chart, the count tops the previous record of 80,764,045 set by Rodrigo’s own “drivers license.”
Rodrigo established the previous record during the January 15-21 tracking period. At that time, the record belonged to Ariana Grande’s “7 rings” (with 71,467,874).
The May 21-27 tracking period marked the second week of availability for “good 4 u” and release week for Rodrigo’s overall debut album “SOUR.”
Fans say BTS’ upcoming single, “Butter,” will be the song of the summer. It’ll be the K-pop group’s second track recorded in English rather than Korean.
But that’s not all! Though “Butter” didn’t match “Dynamite’s” No. 1 debut on Spotify’s Global Top 50 chart (don’t shoot the messenger, ARMY; blame that darn talented Olivia Rodrigo and “Good 4 U”), it set Spotify’s first-day streaming record with almost 21 million “unfiltered” global streams (and over 11 million filtered).
That huge disparity between filtered and unfiltered has to do with the way Spotify determines whether streams are legitimate, and has miffed BTS stans.
K-pop superstars and Grammy nominee BTS added another record for their new digital single “Butter.”
Music streaming app Spotify announced that “Butter” rewrote Spotify history by achieving the highest streams in a single day last May 21, the date the song was released.
“On May 21, #BTS Butter broke the record for most-streamed song in a day in Spotify history #SpotifyCharts,” Spotify Charts posted on Twitter but did not disclose the numbers.
Korean media reported on May 23, based on a press statement by Big Hit Music, that according to Spotify, “Butter” earned 20.9 million global streams on the first day of release on May 21, which is the biggest number of global streams per day in Spotify’s history. This is 66 percent higher than the 12.6 million global streams record set by BTS’ “Dynamite” last year.
