SPOKANE, Wash. The Spokane Public Schools board is now taking submissions for a new name for Sheridan Elementary.
The school board unanimously voted to change the name of Sheridan Elementary last week named after Union General Philip Sheridan, who waged a violent campaign against Native Americans in the Midwest, and is attributed with the phrase “The only good Indian is a dead Indian.”
Now, Spokane Public Schools is looking for a new name for the school.

SPOKANE, Wash. The Spokane Public Schools board will discuss changing the name of Sheridan Elementary in a board meeting Tuesday evening.
Some local schools are on the clock to come up with new team names that do not use Native American symbols and names schools like the North Central Indians. Sheridan Elementary is contending with a slightly different problem.
The school’s namesake, Union General Philip Sheridan, oversaw a campaign “pacifying” Native Americans in the Midwest and driving them into reservations, battling the Cheyenne, Kiowa and Comanche tribes.
His tactics included stealing their supplies, killing their livestock, executing people who resisted and hiring hunters to kill off herds of bison to further drive the Native Americans back.

SPOKANE, Wash. Spokane Mayor Nadine Woodward has expressed her support of the proposal for a downtown sports stadium.
“After respectfully considering the many decisions that go into making a decision like this, supporting the downtown location makes the most community, access and financial sense,” Woodward said in a YouTube video.
In the video released Tuesday night, Woodward said she considered the options and believes the school board should direct the $31 million in already-approved funds toward the downtown site, rather than try to rebuild Joe Albi stadium at its current location in northwest Spokane.
