Report Finds Technology Used to Persecute Faith Groups

A report has found the use of technology is one of the drivers behind a dramatic increase in the persecution of faith groups during the past two years.
Premier News reports, the Religious Freedom report was commissioned by Aid to the Church in Need.
The report found Islamic State terrorists were employing sophisticated digital technologies to attack and expand globally.
The report traced the rise of Islamic networks, including a new tool for online recruitment and radicalisation, referred to as a “cyber-caliphate”.
Meanwhile, in China, the Communist Party is using 626 million Artificial Intelligent surveillance and smartphone cameras, to ensure that religious leaders and believers adhere to the nation’s rules.
Vinnies Celebrates Young Volunteers

One of Australia’s best known Christian charities is celebrating the growing impact of its young volunteers.
The St Vincent de Paul Society in Australia now has 28,500 volunteers under the age of 40 – which is more than a third of the organisation’s volunteer base.
Affectionately known as Vinnies, Eternity News reports, the organisation has young people from primary school through to their late 30s serving in shops, soup vans and leadership positions.
National Vice President for Youth, Jacob Miller, says seven of Vinnie’s advisory committees are led by young people, with more than 60 individuals shaping how the organisation responds to public policy challenges.
New Report Focuses on Religious Literacy in the Media

The role played by local newspapers and radio in encouraging an understanding of faith has been highlighted by a new report.
Learning to Listen, the 98-page report on Religion in the Media, forms part of a wide-ranging review of ‘religious literacy’ across UK press and broadcasting.
Peter Crumpley, a Church of England minister who previously trained as a news reporter, says journalists are often unaware of the rich source of news and feature stories that lie within faith communities.
He told Christian Today, faith leaders are often either wary of the media or are not aware that newspapers and radio stations would welcome hearing from them.
Church Licencing in Egypt Passes Halfway Mark

Premier Christian News reports, 82 new registrations were approved in April.
These licences bring the number of churches which have been granted official recognition to 1,882, with 3,730 churches having applied more than four years ago.
The Egyptian Prime Minister has urged the licence-granting authorities to swiftly clear the backlog of unregistered buildings.
It is illegal to worship in an unlicensed church building in Egypt, but before 2017 it was extremely difficult to obtain a licence.
Meanwhile, a 62-year-old Coptic Christian was recently murdered by Islamic State terrorists in Egypt after being abducted last November.
