81-Year-Old Hermit Living Alone on Italian Island Gets Evicted After 32 years

(Photo : Flo Dahm) An Italian man that has lived on the island for over 30 years will be relocated after being pressured by authorities. Way back in 1989, Mauro Morandi, 81, relocated to Budelli off northern Sardinia. Mr Morandi said last year that the people who own the island, which is well-known for its pink beach, wanted him to leave. On Sunday, he wrote on Facebook saying: I will leave with the hope that in time to come Budelli will be protected as I have protected it for 32 years.   In a conversation with BBC Outlook in 2018, the previous physical education teacher said he had been a bit of a rebel every time. Mr Morandi said he was quite fed up with so many things about our society: consumerism and the political situation in Italy. And he decided to relocate to a desert island in Polynesia, far away from all civilization.  He said he wanted to begin a new life that is close to nature.

Italy s Robinson Crusoe leaves paradise island after 32 years of hermi

Sole inhabitant of Budelli gives up battle to stay on Italian island famous for its pink sandy beaches. An elderly hermit who has lived on the tiny Italian island of Budelli off Sardinia for the past 32 years has announced his reluctant departure after a decades-long dispute over his right to stay there. 82-year-old Mauro Morandi, who has acted as the island s caretaker since 1989, has resisted attempts to evict him by the national park which includes Budelli among its 20,000 hectares of sea and land to the north-east of Sardinia. Morandi has defined his role as keeping tourists at bay , protecting the island s ecosystem and guarding the beach whose pink sand derives its hue from powdered fragments of corals and shells.

More than a year ago, when the world responded to isolation orders to prevent the spread of coronavirus, Mauro Morandi stayed put. He had no reason to move because he has spent the past three decades in isolation by choice. In 1989, Morandi’s catamaran engine crippled and anchor adrift washed up on the coast of Budelli Island, located on a stretch of water between Sardinia and Corsica. As luck would have it, Morandi learned that the island’s caretaker was retiring from his post, so he sold his boat and assumed a new role.
