Stalled semi hit by train in Sparwood
District of Sparwood Mayor David Wilks has just reported on social media that a vehicle has struck a train at Michel Creek Road.
“Mayor and council for the District of Sparwood are asking everyone to stay away from Michel Creek Road at the entrance to Teck. A train has hit a vehicle. At this time we do not believe there are any injuries,” Mayor Wilks stated.
“A semi and trailer were crossing the rail crossing on Michel Creek Road, just off of Highway 3. As the semi was crossing the tracks, there appeared to be a mechanical failure on the tractor and truck could not move. The train could not stop in time and struck the tractor unit dragging it about 150 meters before the train came to a stop. The trailer disconnected from the tractor unit,” the mayor outlined.

What a year it’s been. Hugely memorable yet wildly unfulfilling, the past 12 months – March 11, 2020 to March 11, 2021 have established a range of forced changes on human behaviour for the good of the masses. And as there is always a yin to yang, we’ve witnessed some of the sorriest and most selfish of human behaviours.
At the start of the pandemic, many people railed about it being a hoax. Every single one of those people I spoke with or learned about who barked “hoax” were not doctors, nor nurses or people with any simple clue about what was happening around the world.

Mayor Ange Qualizza
The mayors of Fernie and Sparwood are defending city and district public works staff over criticisms of snow removal following the Dec. 22 blizzard.
City of Fernie Mayor Ange Qualizza stated in a Jan. 6 Facebook (FB) post titled ‘Myth Buster – Windrow Removal’ that rumour-mongers need to stop and think before sharing unverified information.
“It has been suggested to me that there is a rumour on FB that the City of Fernie is going to discontinue the windrow removal program. This is 100% factually untrue and those kind of whispers can be dangerous,” Mayor Qualizza stated.
“I’ll ask – what does your online footprint say about you right now? Did you pile onto that post without verifying if it is true? Did you call City Hall, or my office for an explanation? Or did you pile on with – what a bunch of jerks? If so, then you are an actor,” she said, sharing a Jan. 5 letter from City of Merritt chief administrative officer
