ASCENSION PARISH - Many Ascension homeowners whose property flooded during May s severe rainstorms will be getting a break on their property taxes this year.
The parish tax assessor s office says anyone who had water damage to their property, will be granted exemptions to paying property taxes this year. The water just came up so fast. We had time just to get stuff out of here, but no time to sandbag at this height, Michael LeBlanc said.
Since Mayor Greg Oravec will start his new job as Islamorada village manager July 1, a Port St. Lucie special election will likely happen in September or October

Meeting children’s educational needs early has long-term benefits
I am a retired educator. When children enter school, they are full of energy, with a natural desire to learn. It is vital that we make learning possible for all.
Many children who were so eager to learn in kindergarten feel like a failure by third grade if their academic and emotional needs are not met. I propose Indian River County Schools set up a pilot program in a high-needs elementary school. Each classroom should be staffed with a teacher and assistant. The small class size needs to remain the same. An assistant can provide individual and small group help.
ST. LUCIE COUNTY A 104-acre brush fire near Dyer Road by the Spanish Lakes community east of U.S. 1 is fully contained, a Florida Forest Service official said Tuesday afternoon.
Emergency officials about 3:41 p.m. Sunday were notified of smoke near Dyer Road, and local and state officials have been working to manage the wildfire since then.
The blaze, which caused minor damage to three homes on San Juan Lane in the Spanish Lakes community, was 75% contained by Monday, but that grew to 100% Tuesday afternoon, said Miguel Nevarez of the forest service.
“Just because it is 100% contained does not mean we re not going to have people there,” Nevarez said. “Over the next few days, you will still see the Florida Forest Service with the St. Lucie County Fire District patrolling the area.”
