Super-Sized Snowflakes: Vt Artist Uses Microphotography to Zoom in on Nature

One of the things I enjoy about it is bringing joy to others, Foster told NECN and NBC10 Boston Friday. Using a tiny brush to grab individual snowflakes, and a DIY-style microscope and camera setup, Foster super-sizes intricate details of ice crystals. Additionally, he uses a prism to send rainbow colors toward his lens for stunning backgrounds. You get the perfect snowflake, you breathe on it, it melts, it blows away there s a challenge aspect to it that I love, Foster explained. Caleb was living in Pennsylvania and already experimenting with magnifying flakes when his day job in life sciences research meant a relocation to Jericho, Vermont.

I m the Ice Man : How a Retiree in a Small New England Town Found a New Career Photographing Winter Frost

Some of Len Burgess s ice crystal photography. Photo courtesy of Len Burgess. On cold winter mornings, 83-year-old Len Burgess wakes up before dawn, picks up his camera, and checks the storm windows on his Danvers, Massachusetts, home. When conditions are just right, he can photograph delicate ice crystals that form on the surface of the glass between the window panes and the resulting images are stunningly beautiful. “I’m the ice man. No one else shoots this stuff at all,” Burgess told Artnet News of his new photo series, which he simply calls “Ice Crystals.” Now retired after running his own advertising agency for nearly 40 years, Burgess has been taking photographs since he was 15, when he received a Kodak box camera as a gift.
