LEWISTON – If you did not adopt a “pandemic puppy” sometime over the past year and a half, it is likely someone you know did.
While our furry friends’ companionship has been a lifeline for many during this time, the boom in pet ownership combined with the challenges of practicing veterinary medicine during a public health emergency, has put a strain on the veterinarians who keep our loved ones healthy.
VANDALS who destroyed freshly planted trees in a park have been slammed as “mindless” by a frustrated councillor. They were growing in Summers Park, off Strawberry Avenue, Lawford, after developers replaced a handful which had died following a previous planting scheme. But residents were saddened to see five had been snapped in what has been described as a thoughtless, selfish act. Carlo Guglielmi, district councillor for Lawford, Manningtree and Mistley, said he would love to have a word with the perpetrators.
The trees were snapped in Summers Park He said: “These are mindless idiots who have snapped the trees for the sheer fun of it, I can’t see any other reason as to why they would have done this.
Before it was formed with dredge, the adjacent area to the north was known as Cedar Point and then called the more attractive sounding Sunset Point, a popular spot for locals and sweethearts to watch the multi-hued skies as the sun went down.
According to Sarasota historian Karl Grismer, early on a short-lived business was started there by Eli Veruki and Andrew X. Alexaky who exported dried fish roe to European markets under the name Gotzago.
There was the Roberts and Stanton boat house with an engine repair shop, and a sawmill was built at Cedar Point which provided lumber for the growth of the newly incorporated small town.

MARION - The Marion Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors recently joined Bob and Connie Goyer for the grand opening of the Huber Historic Home at 416 E. Church St. in Marion. The Goyers purchased the home in 2011 and have been restoring it since. The 8,100 square foot mansion was built in 1908 by Frank and Nona (Fahey) Huber. Frank Huber was the president of the Marion Steam Shovel, vice president of Fahey Bank and a community leader in the early 1900s.

The average property tax bill in New Jersey was $9,112 last year, but some taxpayers pay just a fraction of that.
Here’s a look at where people are paying the least in every county, which is measured by the average property tax bill. The average property tax bill is a function of a town’s tax rate and its average residential property value.
The second yard stick is the equalized tax rate.
Some towns assess the value of homes at about 100 percent of what they’ll sell for on the market. Others, however, assess homes at a much lower value because time has passed since the last revaluation. Those towns might charge a higher tax rate on its properties to generate the same amount of tax revenue as another town. So your tax rate could be higher than someone who owns a similar house in another town, but you may not actually pay more if your town says your house is worth less.
