Local roundup: Hartford girls lax returns to winning ways Zoe Pfeiffer Modified: 5/24/2021 10:38:07 PM STRATTON MOUNTAIN, Vt. The Hartford High girls lacrosse team appears intent on standing atop VPA Division II until someone finds the temerity to knock them off. The Hurricanes bounced back from their first loss of the season over the weekend by dominating Stratton Mountain to the tune of an 18-4 defeat on Monday. Hartford (13-1) used a pair of quick first-half bursts to take control, riding six-goal performances from Adi Cadwell and Zoe Pfeiffer to victory. Cadwell, Caroline Hamilton (four goals) and Pfeiffer scored within the game’s first three minutes to get Hartford started. The Canes took control for good with four goals in less than two minutes from Chloe Jensen, Pfeiffer and twice from Cadwell late in the half and cruised from there.

Letter: Public passage on 'Forest Road 383' trail should be allowed

Public passage on ‘Forest Road 383’ trail should be allowed To the editor: I am writing this letter out of concern about the loss of public passage on the trail that goes south along the eastern side of the East Branch of the Deerfield River. This trail has recently been posted with “No Trespassing” signs by the owner/logger of a 383-acre section of land that the trail crosses. This section of private land is sandwiched between land that is part of the Green Mountain National Forest and Great River Hydro land. This trail is marked on many maps as Forest Road 383. It starts at the Stratton Mountain parking lot on the Stratton-Arlington Road. It follows the beautiful and pristine East Branch of the Deerfield River down to where it meets the Somerset Reservoir. From that point you have access to the Grout Pond Trails as well as the trails along the East and West sides of Somerset Reservoir.

But after a pep talk from head coach Jesse Soulia, the Panthers made a big comeback and won 26-14 for their first victory of the season. The Panthers (1-3) scored 10 runs in the third to spark that comeback. “Tonight, I watched my team come together and support each other on and off the field,” Soulia said. “Players playing in places that they had not played before. Hits were contagious tonight and I surely enjoyed seeing all the smiles.”

Keynotes: Thompson family reunites after second vaccination dose

KEYNOTES: Thompson family reunites after second vaccination dose Rosemary Rimkus Like families everywhere, the four generations of the family of Hudson residents Raymond and Muriel Thompson look forward to post-COVID, when they can again gather for special occasions. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Oct. 3, 2019, just before the pandemic struck, but they have been “masking and distancing” for over a year. With Covid restrictions since March 2020, it has been impossible to visit, hug or see their little ones, or other family members. Recently both received their second vaccination, and were finally able to meet their newest grandchild, Halle, 3 1/2 months old, for the first time. Parents of seven daughters and one son, they now embrace 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Their children are Muriel, Frances, Eileen, Nora, twins Clare and Mary Anne, Raymond and Jeanne.
