Councillor Stuart Barwood said he supports removing the requirement for a consent to drop if a business changes hands. (File photo) Councillor Stuart Barwood said he would support a watered down version of the change, whereby the consent would drop only if the business closed and not if it changed management. Mayor Graham Smith said “We did workshop this and had a discussion and what did come out of that was that revenue comes through these machines and finds it way back through into the community”. Councillor Matt Murphy said he supported the change undiluted. “I’d argue that there are very few benefits to the communities within our district by having gaming machines. I think there’s a bigger question here, as opposed to numbers of machines; ultimately do we need or want any machines in the district?”

A decision on how to protect native species in the Mackenzie Basin has been delayed as councillors say they don’t properly understand the proposal. The district council proposal, known as Plan Change 18, is to designate vast swathes of the Mackenzie as areas of natural significance, and mostly stop new clearance and irrigation of that land, as well as making it more difficult to clear native vegetation in the rest of the basin. At a Mackenzie District Council meeting on Tuesday, councillors were due to vote on whether to adopt the recommendations, which were made by independent commissioners.
