Teddy Roosevelt, a wealthy Republican, realized that even his big business friends couldn’t always be trusted, especially with monopolies and sweatshops. Roosevelt knew that the businessmen consider profit sacred.
Ethics had no place in business, to some. It was acceptable to cut corners to enhance profits. We witnessed firsthand that business abuses and unregulated banking and investment practices led to the Great Depression.
Teddy’s Democratic cousin, Franklin, went further, putting government to work for the working class. Jobs were created through innovative infrastructure projects. It was good for both the working-class and business community. Government saved the day.
