A man accused of raping an elderly woman and possessing child pornography five years ago told a judge on Friday he has not been successful in hiring a new lawyer to represent him in the county’s longest pending criminal case.
The sexual assault charges filed in 2016 against Jeffrey Martin, 56, accuse him of raping a woman with whom he was staying in Normal. According to authorities, Martin was hired by the woman to work on electronics and she allowed him to stay at her residence.
Police allegedly found illegal images on Martin’s computer during a search of the woman’s home as part of the sexual assault investigation.

In April, Bloomington attorney Steve Skelton withdrew as Martin’s most recent lawyer, telling the judge his relationship with his client was “beyond unfruitful.” Six private lawyers and several public defenders have worked on the cases, but were allowed by a judge to walk away after disputes with Martin.

For the staff at Montana State University’s Red Bluff Research Ranch near Norris, the arrival of springtime means preparing for several hundred new lambs.
Red Bluff, which covers nearly 11,000 acres between Norris and the Madison River, is staffed by ranch foreman Noah Davis, sheep foreman Wyatt Geis and shepherd Raul Franco-Urcos. All three live on the property, which proves useful when the time comes for lambing. Nearly 700 lambs are born over five weeks each spring.
