Remembered as the best in her trade, photojournalist Nancy Heffernan dies

Nancy Ann Heffernan was an artist when she had a camera in her hand. In the dark room creating prints from negatives, she was one of the best. She was also outgoing and likeable. For long-time Savannahians, she might be remembered for the now famous photograph of President Jimmy Carter standing on the bar at the infamous Pinkie Masters. Heffernan died peacefully Tuesday at her home in Savannah with her daughters Katie and Anna Mothersbaugh and niece Ainslee Heffernan by her side. She died from complications of liver cancer. She was 68. Katie Mothersbaugh said of her mother, she was “very extroverted. Always talked with strangers. That’s how she knows everybody. She was very interesting, outspoken, blunt. Just an amazing, brilliant person. Really intelligent.”

New Georgia voting bill brings sweeping changes. Here's how it will impact you

New Georgia voting bill brings sweeping changes. Here s how it will impact you Raisa Habersham, Savannah Morning News © Steve Bisson/savannahnow.com Absentee Ballot Drop Box at the W. W. Law Center Georgia lawmakers passed SB 202, an omnibus bill that makes sweeping changes to the state s voting laws. The controversial bill raised concerns among Democrats that changes to the absentee ballot and early voting laws would lead to increased voter suppression. The bill replaces the controversial signature match system with an ID requirement for absentee ballots. Voters must use their driver’s license, state ID, voter card, or last four digits of their social security number to verify who they are when returning the ballot.

Steve Bisson captured Savannah with his camera

Steve Bisson captured Savannah with his camera Savannah Morning News Chief Photographer Steve Bisson retired at the end of November. As an award-winning visual journalist and historian, Steve had documented his hometown and Coastal Georgia for more than four decades. Much has changed during that time. We have his photographs to show us. Steve shared his thoughts on his career and his retirement: I’m leaving the newspaper after 42 years of full time, plus a year as weekend photographer in 1976, and as an intern during the summer months in 1974. I’m going to miss the parades and graduations, or waiting for hours for a barge to sink or a plane full of soldiers to return. Not to mention waiting for baby goats to start jumping or almost-invisible jelly fish to slow down for a photograph.
