NACS drops face mask mandate
ASHLEY SLOBODA | The Journal Gazette
The Northwest Allen County Schools board tonight decided to make face masks optional for its second summer session.
The policy will apply to the fall semester if COVID-19 infection rates remain low, spokeswoman Lizette Downey said.
The board voted 4-0 in favor of the proposal, with board member Steve Bartkus absent.
Mask mandates have been a controversial issue for the district, drawing parents from both sides to meetings.
Students, teachers and staff have been required to wear masks in the school system since students returned to in-person learning. The mandate followed state guidelines and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Critical thought
Mike Schaffner
I am a teacher in the Northwest Allen County School District. My views are my own.
This is an attempt to rebuke some of Travis Striggle s claims made in his letter published on May 14. I respect Striggle s service but disagree with his group s stance on masking and casting doubt on vaccinations.
Striggle s group is using its mask stance to masquerade as a set of beliefs so he and his group can claim persecution. Throughout this evolving ordeal, the Unmask NACS group has touted differences on either side of the “masking” debate as “differences in beliefs” rather than a matter of one side being completely contrary to established fact and consensus. This is something I cannot abide.

NACS board president s wife says kids should stay home on count day
ASHLEY SLOBODA | The Journal Gazette
The wife of the Northwest Allen County Schools board president is urging parents to keep their children home on fall count day in an attempt to cost the 7,900-student district state funding.
Lisa Bobay-Somers comments on social media has renewed calls for Kent Somers resignation. Pull your kid and go remote for now, Bobay-Somers wrote in a Facebook comment shared with The Journal Gazette by multiple people. This will be hard for them now. It wont [sic] cost them any money now if you pull your kids. Next fall, sign up as usual and then keep your kids home on the day they count the kids. That s the day they get their funding. If 600 kids are gone it would cost the school $5 million.
