Two other people were also shot, a man and a woman who were also “known to police, ” said Sgt. Frank Jang of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. They were taken to hospital with “severe injuries, but they are expected to survive.”
Three locations within Steveston Park were considered, including the footprint of the existing community and recreational facilities, but ultimately city council chose the option with the least construction cost of approximately $93.5 million, allowing the existing facilities to remain operational to the public during construction, and the fastest construction period.
This includes $56 million for the new building with a total floor area of 60,350 sq. ft., $20 million for site preparation, and $14.5 million for 160 additional and replacement vehicle parking stalls, with 60 stalls located underground and 100 stalls on the surface. The construction timeline is estimated to be between four and five years.
In contrast, the other site options to the west carried a construction cost of up to $140.5 million and a construction period up to eight years.
Integrated Homicide Investigation Team Sgt. Frank Jang stood near the park Friday and said the murder appears to be part of the continuing gang conflict. He urged people with information to call police. “Please reach out to us if you’re in a position to help. We’ve got to stop this from happening. This is unacceptable. Everybody agrees it is unacceptable even those in the inner circle of these people who are responsible … agree that this is unacceptable. Let’s do something about it,” Jang said. Mohammed’s murder is the fourth deadly shooting in the Lower Mainland in less than two weeks all believed linked to the Lower Mainland gang conflict.
