THE CONSTRUCTION of a new road in Cullivoe which leads to the area’s busy pier has received its final approval from councillors.
A full business case for the new £5 million two-lane road between Gutcher and Cullivoe went in front of a meeting of the full Shetland Islands Council on Wednesday and elected members were happy to give their backing.

The upgrade of the B9082 was made a priority road project in 2019 as it is no longer considered fit for purpose due to the number of HGV vehicles using the road.
It is a vital link road for the fishing and aquaculture industries which use the Cullivoe pier.
A BUDGET which plans for a total unsustainable draw from reserves of over £12 million in the next financial year has been approved by councillors.
The budget shows revenue and capital spending will outstrip income from Scottish Government core funding, council tax, fees and charges and sustainable use of reserves by £12.26 million.

A report from Manson described this as affordable in the short-term given the value of Shetland Islands Councilâs investments, which at the end of January stood at £429 million.
But it is the third budget in a row which has required an unsustainable draw from reserves.
Manson said at a meeting of the full council on Wednesday that the budget was âprudent and affordableâ¦but not yet sustainable in the long-termâ.

THE LIBERAL Democrats had no direct input in securing almost £19 million of fair funding for inter-island ferries in Orkney and Shetland, senior members of the SNP have insisted.
The issue raised its head again in a Lib Dems press statement issued on Monday afternoon announcing that the party would vote in support of the minority governmentâs budget on Tuesday.
