SALT LAKE CITY The Internal Revenue Service has agreed to grant tax-exempt status to a Texas-based nonprofit that urges Christians to pray for elected officials and vote after Republicans in Congress, including two from Utah, expressed outrage at its initial decision. First Liberty Institute says the reversal came after a national backlash against the IRS rejection of nonprofit status for Christians Engaged because the agency claimed that the sanctity of life, biblical marriage, and biblical justice were associated principally with political platforms. (The Center Square) â After major backlash from Republicans, the IRS said Wednesday it overturned a previous ruling that a Christian group did not qualify for tax-exempt status because of its Biblical values. Christians Engaged focuses on âencouraging and educating Christians to be civically engaged.â The group incorporated as a nonprofit in Texas in 2019, but when it applied for federal nonprofit status, it was denied. Christians Engaged released the denial letter from the IRS, which says that the 501(c)(3) nonprofit status was rejected in part because the groupâs focus on Bible teachings are typically affiliated with the [Republican] party and candidates.â
