Town of Concord receiving $5.5 million in COVID-related ARPA aid

Wicked Local The federal government recently released the estimated local aid approved through the recently enacted American Recovery Plan Act. According to Concord Town Manager Stephen Crane, the town will receive approximately $5.5 million in direct federal aid. “We get the direct appropriation that other places will get for counties, as well,” Crane told the Select Board during its virtual meeting on March 29. “Not having meaningful county government here in Massachusetts is going to pay off in the amount of stimulus we’re receiving.” Although the Treasury Department will provide its interpretation on eligible uses, the following activities are specifically permitted:

How many litigation cases are open in the town of Concord?

In January 2021, the Symes case was filed against the town as an appeal of certain conditions of the subdivision approval. According to Town Manager Stephen Crane, this case could have only been avoided had the Planning Board failed to apply the town’s inclusionary housing bylaw and even then, an abutter could have appealed. Town Counsel further advised that the vast majority of cases listed on the state courts’ online dockets are complete, but many are improperly listed on the Court’s website as open. According to town documents, there are 61 closed cases (many in tax title takings), three active matters Anderson Kreiger is handling (Estabrook, Symes and the Mandrioli), and nine active matters that Town Counsel does not have an appearance or do not handle. These include six ongoing tax title cases.

Paris Review - The Art of Fiction No. 130

Upon hearing of Italo Calvino’s death in September of 1985, John Updike commented, “Calvino was a genial as well as brilliant writer. He took fiction into new places where it had never been before, and back into the fabulous and ancient sources of narrative.” At that time Calvino was the preeminent Italian writer, the influence of his fantastic novels and stories reaching far beyond the Mediterranean. Two years before, The Paris Review had commissioned a Writers at Work interview with Calvino to be conducted by William Weaver, his longtime English translator. It was never completed, though Weaver later rewrote his introduction as a remembrance. Still later,
