B C Housing buys another Victoria hotel, as camping ban set to come into effect

“Because this hotel is now in public ownership, the almost 100 people who are safely housed with supports now can breathe a sigh of relief they won’t have to move at the end of the lease,” Housing Minister David Eby said in a statement Wednesday. The plan is to convert 94 of the hotel’s 96 rooms to temporary supportive-housing units, with the other two units used for administration. The goal is to eventually turn the entire property into affordable rental housing, Eby said. The purchase includes the hotel and two adjacent parking lots at 722 and 726 Discovery St. It’s the third hotel purchased by the province in Greater Victoria in the past year, as it focuses on providing housing to address the years-long issue of people living in parks and on the streets.

Craziness : MP calls for open mind on weapons licensing

Premium Content Subscriber only The current weapons licensing system is ‘demonising’ licensed firearm owners, Mirani MP Stephen Andrew says. The One Nation MP has called on the state government to have an ‘open mind’ in its approach, citing “more than 500 active cases in the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal involving appeals against the Weapons Licensing Branch of Queensland Police Service”. In a question on notice in Queensland Parliament to Police Minister Mark Ryan, Mr Andrew said this compared to fewer than 120 cases for the whole of the preceding 11 years. “Will the minister explain the sudden and truly massive increase in appeals against weapons licensing decisions that has occurred in the last few months?” he asked.

Map of proposed bikeway on Richardson Street in Victoria. A cyclist rides on Richardson Street. The bikeway planned for the street has generated vocal opposition, with a flurry of letters to the editor, a petition and an organized social-media presence called Rethink Richardson lobbying city council to revise the design. ADRIAN LAM, TIMES COLONIST Victoria council has opted to continue with an approved plan for a bikeway project on Richardson Street in a 6-3 vote that rejected a motion to delay for further consultation. Under the plan, the physical road will remain mostly the same, with added on-street parking in some areas that will narrow the road, and five traffic diversions that will prevent through-traffic for motor vehicles. Cyclists, who are normally required to ride as close to the right as possible, will share the road with motorists, who can pass a cyclist by pulling around on the cyclist’s left, as they would on any local street.

Speaking on the Youth Justice and Other Legislation Amendment Bill before Queensland Parliament on Tuesday, Ms Camm said Townsville’s car theft spree had now reached the Whitsundays and Mackay’s northern suburbs. “That fear (communities have about crime) is now being translated into my own community as we see these repeat offenders consistently travel from Townsville to Mackay,” the Whitsunday MP said. “They are not happy enough stealing cars in Townsville; they now steal cars in Mackay and its Northern Beaches.
